    A keg is a container that is metallic and used to store beer. A keg pump is used to dispense beer from the keg. Kegs are primarily found in pubs and bars. Are you planning to throw a beer party in your backyard?

    Worry no more because this article will focus on the steps to follow when opening a keg.

    One can buy keg pumps in many online shops. They also vary in price depending on their originality and quality. When purchasing a keg pump, check on its durability, price, warranty, design, and quality. Also, choose one that is easy to operate and compatible with different types of kegs. For those who have never opened a barrel, you can follow these steps;

    Research

    The first thing that is very important before you step on opening a keg is to research the type of keg you want to purchase. You can get a keg pump for sale in the market, found in many designs. Ensure that you buy the correct parts of the keg pumps from the market.

    Chill your Keg

    It is good to ice the whole keg. It will help you dispense a beer with a perfect head and not just beer with a lot of foam. After putting it in a large bucket or clean garbage bag, you can stuff ice around the keg, then leave it for some hours to chill. You can also ice the beer line and tap before you pour out the beer. Beer chilled is always tastier than warm beer.

    Connect the pump

    On the keg, there is a tap fixture. You can now remove the plastic around it and place the pump in the tap with the handle facing upwards. Apply pressure downwards as you turn the system of the tap in the clockwise direction. Ensure the taps are locked to avoid splashing the beer once the pump is connected.

    Engage the pump

    You can now push the pump handle down to allow the gas into the keg. When the gas goes in, the beer will flow out. However, when you see the bubbles coming out of the connection, it means the keg is not sealed correctly. You will need to turn off the keg handle to disconnect, then try connecting again.

    Pump

    You can now push the valve down to pour the beer into your vessel. Note that for the first time, you will not require to pump the beer because the pressure in the keg will let out the beer without pumping. When the pressure is down, you can use the pump to dispense beer from the barrel to your drinking vessel. The first poured beer may have a lot of foam. You can discard this and pour another one.

    Conclusion

    These steps when opening a keg will become handy, especially if you are a first-time user. Always ensure that you buy the correct keg pump for your barrel especially when shopping online.
