There’s nothing quite like a breath of fresh air. Whether it is just to destress or our nerves are getting the best of it, that cleansing breath is unparalleled in the moment. However, we want to make sure that the air we are breathing in is healthy for us to take in, especially when we are indoors where contaminants and pollutants may roam.

This is where proper ventilation in your household can make all the difference, improving your indoor air quality with a friendly assist from some outdoor air and other aids.

    Keeping Ventilation Systems Clean

Considering many of us are spending a lot more time around the house these days, proper home ventilation is more important than ever. No matter how much you use air purifiers, dehumidifiers, and other tools, the air in your house must consistently be circulated. Without proper airflow, pollutants and contaminants can still find their way into ducts and elsewhere throughout the home, aggravating allergies and leading to dangerous long-term health effects.

Proper home ventilation is also a key partner in conjunction with your home’s HVAC system, responsible for central heating and air conditioning throughout the year. Whole-house ventilation units can help to take the stale air from inside a room and exchange it for the fresh air from outside. These energy recovery units also heat and cool the incoming air using energy from the outgoing air, and provide consistent comfort, while improving a home’s indoor air quality.

    Proper Cleanliness

A home ventilation system can do wonders for your heating, cooling, and overall air quality. That’s only true though if you properly maintain them. HVAC systems require regular inspection and evaluation by licensed specialists to make sure that ductwork is properly attached and not leaking, nor is there any buildup from dust and other contaminants. Properly cleaning out ducts can assure good ventilation and also keep an HVAC unit running properly.

Oftentimes, people find that their air conditioner is suddenly not cranking out the cold air, or their heater is not keeping their whole house warm. This sends them running to the thermostat to adjust the temperature. What ends up happening is more energy gets expended, as your HVAC system is not running at its optimal standard. This sends your electric bills skyrocketing every time you turn the unit on. Be sure to keep a high standard when it comes to cleaning the entirety of your house, as this puts you at the frontline against dangerous mold and mildew buildup. Those spores can have significant damage to your respiratory system and have been linked to several chronic health conditions.

    Open the windows.

How many times have you found yourself cooking and opening the windows to get the odors out? Or have you just painted and need to get the gases and fumes to dissipate? Outdoor air intake is important for your household, bringing in some immediate fresh air to almost instantly improve your indoor air quality. Opening windows will help to create a cross-ventilation and in some cases, work in conjunction with air cleaners to remove contaminants from the air.

Exhaust fans within your bathroom or kitchen have also help with ventilation, as part of a plan to get fumes out of your as household as quickly as possible. This can also maximize energy efficiency by not having to put a dependency on an HVAC system for cooling and heating constantly, just by bringing in a slight breeze to cool down temps during a warmer day. Remember, your home is your safe haven, so make sure the air you are breathing is safe too.
