Trampolines provide hours of bouncing fun for the whole family. But over time, exposure to the elements can cause trampoline springs to wear out and lose their bounce. Replacing springs can be expensive and time-consuming. Fortunately, with some simple maintenance you can keep your 5.5 trampoline springs in top condition for longer lasting performance.
Inspect Springs Regularly
The first step is regularly inspecting your trampoline springs to check for signs of wear and tear. Look for springs that appear stretched out or fatigued. Also check for rust spots, which indicate corrosion is breaking down the steel. If more than a few springs show wear, it’s likely time to replace all of the springs for optimal bounce. Catching issues early allows you to replace just individual damaged springs instead of the whole set.
Protect Springs from Rust
Since rust is a leading cause of spring deterioration, keeping your steel springs from corroding will extend their usable life. You can purchase special trampoline spring covers that encase the springs to protect them from moisture. Alternatively, regularly spraying springs with a rust-inhibiting lubricant will shield the steel from oxidation.
Try This Rust Inhibitor Spray
- WD-40 Specialist Rust Inhibitor Spray
- CRC Heavy Duty Corrosion Inhibitor
- Fluid Film Rust & Corrosion Preventive Coating
Be sure to reapply coating every few months or as directed for continued protection.
Keep Springs Clean
Dirt, leaves, grass clippings and other yard debris that accumulate on the springs can hold moisture and accelerate deterioration. About once a month, clean springs using a stiff brush and cloth to wipe away stuck-on grime. Avoid using harsh cleaners or abrasives that could damage the spring metal.
Lubricate Springs to Prevent Squeaking
Squeaky springs not only produce annoying noises, but the added friction can also speed up wear and tear. Regularly lubricating the springs and connections helps minimize friction. Use a light lubricant like silicone or Teflon spray, applying it to the full length of springs, as well as j-hooks and v-rings.
Caution: Only apply lubricant to the springs when the trampoline is not in use to avoid slippery surfaces leading to falls.
Replace Damaged Parts Right Away
While keeping your 5.5 trampoline springs in good condition extends their lifespan, springs will eventually need replacing after years of high-impact use. Catching and replacing just one broken spring is much cheaper than waiting until multiple springs snap. Refer to the manufacturer’s guide for proper spring replacement procedures.
In addition to springs, also replace any stretched out jump mats, ripped net enclosures, missing padding, or broken frames that could lead to injury or property damage when continuing to use a compromised trampoline.
Safety Checklist
- No broken springs, padding, or netting
- Frame is sturdy with no visible cracks
- All poles, leg bases, and attachments are securely fastened
- No obstruction underneath or around the trampoline
With some simple maintenance and safety awareness, you can keep your trampoline springs bouncing for many more years of high-flying family fun!
