5 Styles Of Party Dresses You Need To Know

Most events these days specify dress codes in the invitation, and it is better to print it in black and white than to leave guests wondering what to wear. You probably won’t show up at the family barbecue wearing a gown, but other occasions may not be as simple.

Dress codes are important to set standards and rules considered appropriate for different occasions while creating a cohesive atmosphere during the event itself. Codes for party dresses vary according to the occasion, venue, time of day, and even the menu. Black ties usually indicate formal events such as large weddings and galas, while semi-formals and cocktails are fit for early evening occasions that serve canapes and drinks.

Here is a rundown of common party dress codes to help you dress up for your next event.

    Types of Party Dress Codes

    • Informal

Informal party dress styles vary for daytime and night-time events. For informal daytime parties you can wear a sundress, a skirt and top, or even pants, but not jeans. High heels are not required. For evening wear, informal party dresses allow flexibility, such as maxi dresses and flats or little black dresses with heels.

    • Cocktail

Cocktail attire usually means short dresses for women, such as little black dresses. It is typically playful and festive, but you need to keep them at an appropriate length and look. Cocktails are the standard dress code for weddings, holiday parties, and class reunions, so go for polished dresses that are not too revealing. If you’re not quite sure what you should wear, you will never go wrong with your little black dress.

    • Semi-Formal

Also called the “after six attire,” semi-formal party dresses can be tricky. Simply put, it is between the cocktail attire and black-tie dress codes. Cocktail and little black dresses can be worn, but make sure that they are polished and sleek, with the hem no shorter than two inches above the knee. This could also include dressy suits, heels and strappy sandals, and sparkling gemstones.

    • Beach Formal or Dressy Resort

This dress code considers location above all else. The formal or dressy resort dress code is usually reserved for summer weddings or outdoor social events (beach optional). These events’ safest options are flowy maxi dresses in fashionable prints, full-length jumpsuits, and dressy flats or wedges. Keep the hair and makeup polished to elevate your look, and keep jewellery to a minimum.

    • Black Tie

Most people have heard of the black-tie dress code, but you probably don’t know what this means unless you are invited to many big events. The black-tie dress codes are a lot stricter for men than for women. Black tie dress codes allow women to dress in formal cocktail attire, but for a more elevated look, opt for a full-length long gown. Find a sophisticated look in a bold and elegant colour with a feminine silhouette that flatters your figure.

Whether you are off to an informal party or a black-tie event, plan your outfit to make sure you are following the dress code. Remember that it is perfectly fine to ask your hosts to be more specific about what outfits are acceptable for their event. Have fun preparing your outfit, but more importantly, enjoy the event!
