Dangers of Scooters On the Road

Scooters are fun, fast, and convenient. They save time and energy and often come with a fun decorating package. However, think twice before hopping on one of these miniature vehicles if you live in the city. That’s because scooter riders are not just playing a game of chicken with cars but also putting themselves at risk for serious injuries that could even lead to death. So educate yourself on how to ride safely before zooming around town pays off. Scooters also come with a ton of warnings. Car and scooter accident lawyer information can help you learn all the facts before you buy or ride a scooter.

    1. Scooters are Powerful

Scooters are smaller and lighter than bikes, but they’re not toys. Some models can reach speeds of 22 miles per hour. That’s fast enough to outrun most cars and trucks on the road. And even if you’re not traveling that fast, the wind resistance from moving at high speeds could easily cause you to lose control of your scooter. This puts you in danger every time you ride, so it pays to be extra careful. And don’t forget that scooters also aren’t all the same. They vary in weight, top speed, and engine power, so check the specs on your model before you go out.

    2. Scooters are Easy to Control

Most of us are familiar with bicycles because they’re also known as “bicycles.” It would be best to balance yourself on a bike, but all the weight is on one wheel, so you can easily control it. Scooters have two wheels and a wider base, so they’re trickier to manage. This makes them much more dangerous if you don’t know how to ride them properly. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration studies collisions between cars and scooters to learn how to avoid them.

    3. Scooters are Hard to See

Your safety doesn’t just depend on your ability to control the scooter you’re riding. It also depends on how quickly other vehicles will be able to see you and react accordingly. Unfortunately, scooters are very small, making them hard to spot in a busy parking lot or bustling street. Be extra careful when riding around blind corners in parking lots and intersections with cars coming from multiple directions. Many people have been hurt after drivers failed to see and hit them on the road.

    4. Scooters Lack a Protective Frame

All vehicles, including scooters, have a frame to protect you. But scooters have only a few extra inches of space around the wheel that they use to attach the handlebars. This makes it easy for your left arm to get bumped against the wheel, which can cause serious injuries that might not be apparent until later. If your scooter doesn’t have adequate protection in this area, you must wear a protective jacket or vest when you ride it. Moreover, getting a helmet to protect your head would be best. A fall or collision could knock you unconscious and even cause brain injury.

Just because scooters are fun and convenient doesn’t mean they can’t lead to serious injuries. Don’t let yourself get in a situation where you could be seriously injured because of an accident with a scooter. Take your time, learn how to ride safely, and enjoy the lighter, faster, and more fun experience of riding a scooter instead of a bike. Additionally, a car and scooter accident lawyer has information that can help you out in case of an accident.
